James Kerr – Legacy, a book review

In a nutshell (224 pages), this book is about the legendary New Zealand All Blacks of international rugby fame. Since 1903, the All Blacks have won 77% of all their matches. It’s beyond belief how strong they have been for 120 years, it defies logic. This book by journalist and fan James Kerr dives into the traditions that allowed the team to thrive through so many generations in one of the world's most loved and competitive sports.

What I got out of it

Anyone who has read the stories of Phil Jackson, or Bill Walsh, celebrated American sports coaches will recognize the underlying messages. Be humble, work hard, stay open-minded, work as a team, etc. Kerr does a decent job of translating the traditions and mindset of the organization for business life.

What was difficult

The book is phenomenal, especially for me a big All Blacks fan, but if there is any criticism at all it’s that Kerr, a fantastic journalist, the book doesn’t give you the impression he has much understanding of business. His points are always true, but often a bit off.

Recommendation

If you appreciate sports books at all you will enjoy the read. If you enjoy sports books and want to learn from the best winning record in sports history, then definitely give this fantastic book a read.
