W. Chan Kim – Blue Ocean Strategy book review

In a nutshell (240 pages), this is a well written text book on creating a business strategy. Where Red Oceans are waters bloodied by competition, Blue Oceans are clear waters, though not necessarily clear sailing.

What I got out of it

In a world filled with easy advice, this is a book that really breaks down the fundamentals of what the recommended business strategy is. This is not a book of nice ideas and flowery language but concrete proven strategies as well as the thinking required to recreate the strategy for yourself, no matter the industry you are in.

What was difficult

While easy to understand and easy to follow, this is not a book that you want to read over the course of several months. This is more a textbook that you work on, if you want to get everything that you can out of it.

Recommendation

If you are aspiring to go in to business (employee or owner/founder), or you are an executive, you definitely want to read this book. Emphasis on read. This book is easy to read and understand but it still is like an important textbook and deserves the same attention. Audiobook, or light reading will still be a benefit, but sitting down with a pen or pencil and a pad to write down thoughts and ideas is a great idea.
