Ramit Sethi - I Will Teach You to Be Rich

What I got out of it

Along with great financial advice, although much of the advice he gives is for American problems and using American tools, he also does something much more important: he gives permission to enjoy your money. In a world where buying a coffee is labelled as irresponsible, Sethi gets practical and explains why a daily coffee fix is not going to prevent anyone from reaching reasonable goals in a reasonable time frame. And then he explains where you should be looking to make "big wins" that will concretely move the needle for you.

What was difficult

This isn't really a negative per se, but so many topics are covered that it is probably impossible for the whole book to be relevant to any given reader. For example, Sethi talks about what to do with crushing debt when you can't even make minimum payments as well as what to do with a cash windfall. That said, this also makes this a book you'll want to keep in your library so you can bring out new chapters and sections as you move through your journey.

Recommendation

If anything connected to money concerns you, from banking fees to relationships, to figuring out how you'll ever be able to retire, then read this book. Probably the only person who won't get much out of this book is someone who really has studied finance and/or personal finance and has their affairs in order. But even they will benefit from Sethi's philosophy of using a portion of your income to enjoy life. It just won't be worth reading the whole book, and his Instagram account will do fine for receiving that message. It's not true that every book is an investment, this one truly is.
