Cormac McCarthy – No Country for Old Men book review

In a nutshell (309 pages), this is a story of a guy tired of being down on his luck and so decides to take a bag of money he knows he shouldn’t. He soon finds out exactly why his instincts were correct.

What I got out of it

Out the gate, the writing is beautiful. If you’ve ever decided to read a Western novel, or watch a Western movie and you were a little let down, this book is what you wish you had read. The flaws of the main character are so human, the evil is so powerful and as unrelenting as a ticking clock.

What was difficult

This book could be seen as a suspense. It truly belongs in the Western section but it’s a modern Western, and with that it’s a little more serious. A lot more serious. Not too much for the average reader, however.

Recommendation

I strongly recommend you read this book if you’ve ever enjoyed a Western, or a Suspense, or simply want an extremely well-written, gripping story. Then watch the movie. Watch the movie because it makes the writing seem uncanny in retrospect because watching the movie will feel like you’re having a deja vu.
